How does a small business whose markets include manufacturers, commercial construction and agriculture survive one of the worse downturns since the Great Depression?  According to Brandon Jones, president of Jones Welding and Industrial Supply, operating conservatively had a lot to do with it.

A leading provider of industrial welding and industrial supplies and gases in the southeastern United States, Jones Welding and Industrial Supply follows a conservative financial philosophy.  The company has no debt.

"Like a lot of businesses, we were hit hard in 2009. But we were able to drop our expenses and come out ahead," Jones said.

According to Jones, manufacturing and industrial construction activities were both down in 2009.  Business is up slightly this year although many companies are still not making large equipment purchases.

“It looks like it will be a gradual, steady recovery, which is actually better than a quick run-up from a cash-flow standpoint,” Jones said.

According to Jones, local, state and federal governments could help small business owners by reducing the regulatory and tax burdens most currently face.  Potential tax increases resulting from the proposed health care reform legislation are also a concern.

Jones Welding and Industrial Supply offers a complete line of welding and industrial equipment, gases, steel, safety gear and other products acquired over time based on customer input.

“We’ve learned what it means to partner with our customers.  Our goal is to improve their business.  When they are strong, we are strong.  That’s our commitment, and that’s why we’ve been in business as long as we have,” Jones said.

Jones family has run the business since 1984.  It has grown from a small distributorship in Albany into nine stores serving mid and southern Georgia, eastern Alabama and northern Florida.  Jones Welding and Industrial Supply is currently the largest independently owned distributorship in the state of Georgia.
